[Better for You] Chocolate Milk

July 29, 2015

For those of us who have small children, let’s face it, we are no stranger to the drink chocolate milk. Eh, who am I kidding? I love it myself and drank it frequently during the first trimester with my last pregnancy — it had magical stomach calming qualities for me.

BUT.  The fact remains that all store bought chocolate milk contains way more than milk with a little bit of chocolate… *insert exasperated faced emojis here*.

So, per usual, I set out to find out a better way of making it myself and found this great little chocolate sauce recipe. When added to milk it is the perfect ratio of chocolate + milk. ;)

All I ever do is mix the cocoa powder (1 tbsp) + maple syrup (2 tbsp) in the bottom of a 32 oz. mason jar. I usually stir, let it sit a while, stir again and then let it sit some more. And then, when the consistency looks right, fill the jar with milk to the neck. Stir it up and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours (or overnight, because I’m usually making prior to going to bed) before everything mixes just right.  All it needs is a little stir before you pour to drink.  Sounds like a little more fuss than it’s worth but it’s actually very simple and, because you always have these “ingredients” on hand, it means you always have chocolate milk in the house.

I may not give Wyatt chocolate milk every time he asks for it (I mean sheesh kid!) or even every day for that matter. But I find it a great way to get his multi-vitamin and probiotic in him with one swoop because when I hand him his sippy cup full of this stuff he’ll knock it back right away.

I haven’t made any smoothies or “shakes” with it yet, but it’s on the to do list!

Have any other stupidly-simple-homemade-recipes-for-things-that-we-buy-at-the-store-all-of-the-time to share? :)
