If I am to be perfectly honest, I’ve recently been on the fence as to whether or not I’m going to continue with a capsule wardrobe for this Fall. As I enter my second trimester, it makes me anxious to limit my wardrobe and apprehensive to be able to anticipate what kind of growth that I will see. Plus… I think I got my seasonal timing all wrong. So I haven’t much enjoyed wearing my Summer capsule these past few weeks in very Fall like weather.
Last week a friend of mine inquired on Facebook:
so i might be a little too excited to see your fall capsule wardrobe! Are you going to stick with it?! I think I’m living vicariously through you. I keep saying I’m going to downsize my closet and still haven’t, but i swear i’m going to do it soon! lol
I “concisely” responded:
Okay, so it’s so crazy that you ask because I’ve been mulling this over in my mind for a couple weeks now. I planned on writing a blog post about this next week for sure. My biggest dilemma I’m facing is that I’m beginning my second trimester so I’m expecting some growth over the next few months and am not sure how to swing it and feel a little scared about committing my wardrobe to a specific number of pieces!
Also, I think I may have timed my seasonal changes wrong because my summer capsule has been barely cutting it these last few days! (I cheated and dug out my boots yesterday…) I’m thinking I should have timed my fall capsule to begin in September and not October!
I haven’t decided for sure, but I think I will still do some sort of version of a capsule wardrobe (and will share on my blog for sure!) but that it will require some more modifications to make me feel happy and comfortable.
As far as minimizing my wardrobe goes? I love it. I haven’t looked back once. So I can highly recommend purging pieces you aren’t in love with, even if you don’t limit your closet to a set number of items like the Un-Fancy blog models.
If you do follow the Un-Fancy blog, you will know that this gal isn’t about arbitrarily following a set of rules. She’s much more into doing what works. This is the attitude I kept in mind as I created my first capsule, knowing that had many “hats” to dress for. So, fear not. I am sticking with this. I will simply adapt where it makes sense to do so.
A FEW EDITS
- I will be editing my seasons: Fall now spanning through September, October and November. Winter beginning in December. Originally when I chose Fall to be October through December I was remembering how sometimes in the Midwest (specifically Ohio) Summer can drag out all through September. Haha. Not this September baby!
- I will wear my boots right now if it is 50 degree outside. Even though they are not in my current capsule. Period. (I’m such a rebel I know…)
- I will not include scarves, tights or coats as a part of my fall capsule. Jackets, yes but coats — no. I will be warm, not cold should Winter arrive early this year.
- I will include as many maternity items as I need to feel comfortable when initially creating my capsule. I will try to remain as minimalist as possible, but not at the sake of my soon to be expansive belly. (Did you see me last time? Torpedo for sure.)
And there you have it. Glad I could talk some sense into my crazy brain.
With all this talk about my fall capsule, I figured it was about time to share at least a few sneak peeks. Seriously, don’t you just love fall clothes?
Suede ankle boots – I’ve had my eye on these for what seems like forever. The second I scored some Gap cash I used it to buy these for essentially half off. Score. I may or may not have bought them in black as well…
Flannel button down – I think I may have just found the perfect flannel button down. ModCloth has been one of my favorite places to buy unique and very “me” pieces for awhile now. All pieces on their website have some sort of vintage element to them, or at the very least fit in with that style.
Maternity t-shirt dress – I’ve longed for that perfect t-shirt dress to add to my wardrobe for a least a few months. I anticipate that this maternity version of it will prove to be a wardrobe workhorse this fall. I was on the fence with purchasing a maternity pencil skirt as well — but opted for a dress because I think, in such a great layering season, it could easily double as a skirt. If you haven’t tried wearing a dress as a skirt yet, you’re missing out.
Utility jacket – I have yet to purchase this, but think I will pull the trigger pretty soon. This find was from, believe it or not, Amazon. Still just buying books or Christmas presents for Dad there? You’d might be surprised to find they have some pretty good steals in the fashion department as well.
Maternity treggings – Can someone please tell me what a tregging is? Seriously, some of these fashion words… In any case, I’m pumped about finding these maternity black skinnies from H&M. As my bump grows and I loose my waist I also loose my signature body part to “play up” in outfits. I learned last time around that I can just as easily play up my legs with some killer skinnies.
Tribal cardigan – I probably own one too many, and even purged one or two of these from my closet. But gosh darn it if I don’t love me some tribal cardigan. Where did I find this one you ask? Ebay. Yes, Ebay. I still maintain that the secret to an awesome wardrobe, capsule or not, is mixing thrift store finds in with more quality pieces. Ebay is thrifting — but online. Or well at least it can be.
What are some of your favorite fall staples and places you find them?
